Hair Loss in Children

Causes of Kids Hair Loss

Hair loss in children is uncommon. When adults see hair loss, they think of it as a sign of lost youth and it is inevitable. However, when children lose hair, it would look as if youth is slipping away from them untimely. Many kids are facing trauma due to this.

Children suffer hair loss due to varied reasons. However, hair loss in children could be successfully treated if the dermatologist is successful in finding out the reason behind the hair loss. Although it could be treated successfully, many kids are unable to regrow hair, making them live with a lifetime embarrassment and agony of not having hair on their scalp.

What Causes Hair Loss In Children?

The most common cause of children’s hair loss is physiologic pause in hair growth, also called “telogen phase”. A severe shock, trauma or emotional distress can cause hair loss in children and when telogen strikes, the hair goes through spurs and lags in growth just as does the entire body. Although the follicles are resilient during the telogen phase, the follicle's efficiency to regenerate hair gets affected permanently, and thus facilitates permanent hair loss with aging in the long run.

Other cause of hair loss in children is trichotillomania. This results in partial hair loss in children, and this type of kids hair loss is unevenly spread over the scalp. It could also affect the eye brows. This disease is defined as constant urge of the children to pull their own hair. Usually, this habit is a result of fear psychosis. Primarily, the root cause of the problem needs to be addressed to cure Trichotillomania. A psychological counseling is the ideal hair loss treatment for this.

The other hair loss cause of kids’ hair loss is tinea capitis, also known as ringworm of scalps. It is a kind of fungus that propells hair fall complication. It is a transmissible disease that kids suffer from. But they hardly realize that their scalp is afflicted with this fungus. The damage to follicles has already been done before parents notice it. The good news is, this type of hair fall is curable and kids below ten must be saved against it. The hair loss remedy for this consists of anti-fungal creams, medicated hair loss shampoos and sometimes oral medications.

Commonly, children happen to be very careless and negligent towards hair and they put their hair to various types of physical damage before their parents notice it. This could also be a cause of hair fall in kids. This condition is known as children traction alopecia.

Genetic factors are always there. Pili torti, for instance is a very rare genetic condition. It causes the hair to be especially brittle that it breaks off easily; giving the appearance of baldness when in fact the hair is simply very short. Topical hair growth products are not seemingly helpful despite the flashy advertisements.

Parents are primarily responsible in saving their kids from the great distress that hair falling brings. As parents, it is their duty to provide their children with proper hair loss help. They should be keen enough to know whether a child is starting to lose hair and know how to cope with hair loss in children.
